I love checking out stuff like this. Neat quasi-futuristic watches with a serious German attitude and neo-Bauhaus feel. All from a brand that I know for making stuff like shaving razors. But yes, Braun also makes watches and clocks. This is one of their higher-end pieces and it is a digital watch done in collaboration with Pierre Nobs. He is the guy behind Ventura watches. If you look at digital Ventura timepieces, you'll most certainly see the connection. Braun actually can't seem to settle on one name for this watch. They list it as both the BN10 and BN0106 (with this specific model being the BN0106BKBTG).

This particular GG Gefica Hunter GMT Moon Phase watch is just that. The movement has the time (jumping hours and retrograde minutes) with a central red seconds hand. The lower dial has a moon phase indicator (one of those open ones that show the moon phase in both hemispheres), and a subsidiary 24 hour GMT hand. The GMT hand is adjusted using the large pusher on the left side of the case. There is an inset pusher to adjust the moon phase indicator.

How Will You Be Celebrating This Memorial Day Weekend?

If Habring² was a mathematical equation I think the result would be Germanic mechanical sentiments times nouveau design classicism equals whatever you see here. That makes sense right? I never did very well in abstract math. With highly limited production numbers, the best pieces are watches like this Doppel 2.0 (redundant) chronograph watch with what I believe is an in-house movement and slick design.

At SIHH 2012 I painted the picture that conservatism was in, and that also meant fewer new products as brands try to gauge regional economies, tastes, and buying habits. What you see a lot of these days are “commercially viable” pieces. I wasn’t the first one to use that term. You are reading this, so I give you credit for putting the idea so eloquently. Basically it means you look at a watch and it looks pretty aesthetically familiar with a reasonably good design and features mixed with a reasonably good price.  You then sort of shrug indifferently and think to yourself, “it bores me, but it will sell.” That pretty much sums up what your standard commercially viable watch is.

Other things of note: The movement has a 2-hand subdial at nine o'clock. The longer hand is actually the second hand, and the shorter is a 24-hour hand, basically showing AM/PM. The movement handwinds but does not hack, and the setting procedure is a bit more complex due to the triple date. There's no lume, and the crown is non-screwdown, this is not a sports watch and you should keep it dry.

Countdown to Father’s Day

While pricing has yet to be announced, these special editions are a great way to highlight brand successes and Tag Heuer's strong connections with not only Formula 1, but specifically Monaco and its famous course. Given it's provenance as the first automatic chronograph and its truly iconic design, I am a big fan of the base Monaco models and really enjoy how Tag Heuer has managed to protect the style and aesthetic promoted by original models while still promoting innovation and technology through models like the Monaco Twenty Four McQueen.

Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 Watch Hands-on With Video Hands-On

Two of my favorite features, which are new in this model, are the oysterlock with easylink clasp and the ceramic bezel.  First, the clasp. It is secured with two locks, the first to close the bracelet and the second to lock it with a fall over gold buckle adorned with the Rolex crown logo.  It is by far my favorite clasp on a steel bracelet watch as it is comfortable yet very secure.  It has a feel that you must wear to understand… simply superb.

Watch lovers probably know that Ermenegildo Zegna has worked with watch maker Girard-Perregaux in the past. GP is part of the Sowind Group (now part of PPR), which explains how the Sowind Group is involved in this latest collection. What I don’t know is how much Girard-Perregaux’s team is involved with the High Performance watches. GP goes so far as to produce Ermenegildo Zegna branded versions of some of their pieces, sold exclusively in Zegna boutiques.

The movement is a Swiss made Ronda 515, it is a simple, reliable 1 jeweled quartz movement with a date indicator which from what I experienced is pretty accurate gaining no more than ~13 seconds a month. The unidirectional rotating bezel has a small tritium indicator at the 12hr position and is easy to grip and to rotate, yet stays tight in its place and is hard to turn by mistake.

Bremont ALT1-WT World Timer Watch Review Wrist Time Reviews

Inside the watch is predictably a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement. Chopard gets the nicer version of the 7750 possible with fancy polishes, but sadly no blued screws. Of course there is a custom Chopard movement done specifically for the Mille Miglia GTXL watches. It is true that the movement view is obstructed by the "Rosso Corsa" emblem - but at the same time it is a 7750 - and you've probably seen it a number of times before.

This "large" version of the Stirrup is 36.60mm wide by 38.50mm tall. It is also 12.15mm thick. Also available in steel, the case is finely rendered and well polished. This 18k rose gold version offers large areas of polish which greatly emphasizes the warmth of rose gold. You'll notice that the strap connects differently on both ends of the watch, but it is designed so that underneath there is a flush surface for comfort. The strap is solid, but not overly thick. A charming detail is the buckle on the fold-over clasp, which mirrors the design of the case. The strap uses an 18k rose gold tension clasp which requires a firm push to get it to audibly click into place. While I tend to prefer locking or push-button deployant clasps, the buckle on the Stirrup does benefit from having a rather thin profile. It does remind me a lot of clasps I have seen on Cartier watches in the past.
